Donald Trump: The UN has not reached its potential
'Take a bold stand'
While still a candidate for the US presidency, Mr Trump sharply criticised the UN, speaking of its "utter weakness and incompetence"."It has not reached its potential because of the bureaucracy and mismanagement," he said on Monday. He encouraged member states to take a "bold stand" to change the UN's business-as-usual approach rather than "be beholden to ways of the past which are not working".
He called on the new Secretary General, António Guterres, to make changes.
Mr Guterres responded by agreeing that excessive red tape kept him up at night.
"Someone out to undermine the UN could not have come up with a better way to do it than by imposing some of the rules we have created ourselves," said the Portuguese diplomat.
President Trump also complained that the US was "not seeing results in line with US investment".
Under pressure from the Trump administration, the UN has already cut its budget by more than $500m (£370m).
Trump's past UN tweets
The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 26, 2016My Response:
My Opinion:
My opinion on this article is that there is some truth in it, but there is also some false insulting going on. I think that Trump is making big statements, as he does often. However, I do feel that his twitter post has some truth in it. There are a lot of things about the UN that I don't like, and one of the biggest ones is covered by Trump in his post. The fact that the UN don't actually do things is definitely something that I get annoyed with. I feel like at most times, all the UN does is just sit around and talk. I am kind of happy that Trump made this big statement.
Audience:
I think that the audience is people who support the UN, because I feel like Donald Trump wants people to see this and dislike the UN. I think that Trump wants as many people to see this as possible because it makes America look good, and the UN look bad.
Reader Bias:
There is definitely reader bias, and it could go either way, honestly. Because the article is about Trump, and there are such strong opinions on Trump, you could either like this article or dislike it. As a reader, I was feeling kind of like this was just another big statement being said by Trump. This could bring bias in and make people disregard what the article is actually saying. But, I definitely feel like after reading this article, I have bias against the UN. The article doesn't back them up enough.
Author Bias:
I think that since the author is US and Canada, they probably have at least some bias towards Trump even just going into this. The whole part about how America pays a lot of the peacekeeping bills, shows us the bias towards America and Donald Trump and against the UN.
Purpose:
I think that the purpose of this article is to give reason for why the UN is not actually a perfect organization. A lot of people think of the UN with such power and control and good intentions. However, there is a lot of bad in them as well. And I think that this article is trying to get that point across. Also, I think that since it is Trump talking, he is trying to make himself and America look good.
